Sew It Yourself: Freywynne Crossbody Bag

Fabric Palette®  Freywynne Crossbody Bag

 

Finished Size:  10 ½” x 12 ½” x 1 ½”

 

Supplies Needed

 

Before you begin

Read all instructions before beginning project.  Do not pre-wash fabrics.  Before cutting,
press fabrics with a dry iron on cotton setting and remove selvages.  Use a ¼” seam allowance
and sew fabrics with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise noted. Press seams in the
direction of the arrows.

 

Cutting

Use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut the number of pieces from each fabric listed below.
(wof = width of fabric from selvage to selvage)
From the Bundle (18″ x 21″)

  • Blue Tile (cut with design centered)
    1 – 12 ½” x 13 ½” (bag back)
  • Navy-White Floral
    1 – 10 ½” x 12 ½” (top pocket)
  • White-on-White Dot
    1 – 10 ½” x 12 ½” (top pocket lining)
  • Turquoise Wave (directional print)
    2 – 7 ½” x 12 ½” (bottom pocket and lining)
  • Blue Circle
    2 – 4″ x 20 ½” (strap)
    4 – 1 ½” x 13″ (binding)
    1 – 3″ x 11″ (tab)
    1 – 4″ x 9″ (middle strap piece)

 

From the Half Yard (18″ x 42″)

  • White Multi Circles
    3 – 12 ½” x 13 ½” (bag front and lining)
  • Fusible Fleece (18″ x 42″)
    2 – 12 ½” x 13 ½”

Sewing

1)  Fold each bag rectangle in half to measure 6 ¼”.  Cut out template and place on fold as shown.  Mark edge of template and cut on marked line to shape top edge.

2) Make the binding for the top of the pockets with two of the Blue Circle 1 ½” x 13″ rectangles.  Fold wrong sides together so long edges meet; press.  Open and  press the long edges to the center fold .

3) Place the top pocket pieces (10 ½” x 12 ½” Navy-White Floral front and White-on-White Dot lining rectangles) wrong sides together.  Open binding, align cut edge with lining side of pocket top RST and pin.  Stitch through all layers along the first fold line.  Fold the binding over the top edge to the pocket front, keeping cut edge folded under; pin.  Topstitch close to the inside folded edge. Trim the ends even with the pocket sides.  Repeat to add binding to the top edge of the bottom pocket using both 7 ½” x 12 ½” Turquoise Wave rectangles.

4) Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the bag front and back.

5) Place top pocket, lining side down, on the right side of the bag front, matching sides and bottom edges; pin; baste through all layers.  Repeat with the bottom pocket.

6) Sew bag front to bag back RST on the sides and bottom. Box the bottom corners by matching the side seam to the bottom seam; pin.  Measure ¾” from the tip and draw a line from edge to edge; sew on the line.  Turn right side out.  Repeat for the bag lining.

7) Sew the two Blue Circle Straps (4″ x 20 ½”) to each end of the Middle Strap (4″ x 9″) RST.  Press seams open.  Center the ends of the strap on the side seams of the lining with cut edges even; pin.  Check the strap length.  Shorten if  needed by removing from bag and trimming equal amounts from each end.  Fold wrong sides together so long edges meet; press.  Open and press the long edges to the center fold.  Fold in half again and top-stitch close to the folded edges on each side.

8) Make the tab with the Blue Circles rectangle (3″ x 11″) as in Step 2, except fold one short end to the inside ¼”; press and top-stitch.  Fold the hemmed end over the silver O-ring 1 ¼”; stitch to the back of the tab.

9) Place the lining inside the bag, wrong sides together, with the top edges even; pin.  Center the tab at the back of the lining, and center the ends of the strap on the sides of the lining with the cut edges even; pin.  Baste around the top through all layers.

10)  To make the top edge binding, sew the remaining two Blue Circles rectangles (1 ½” x 13″) RST on the short ends; press the seam open.  Press folds as in Step 2.

11)  Attach the binding the same as is Step 3 except fold the beginning over ¼” as you start.  Pin binding around the top edge overlapping the ends ¼”; trim any excess.  Stitch through all layers along the first fold line.  Fold the binding over the top edge to the front; pin.  Topstitch close to the inside folded edge.  Reinforce the strap ends by stitching again at the top edge of the binding through all layers.  Reinforce the tab by folding it up over the binding and stitching through all layers.

Finished Care Instructions

Safety pin O-ring strap to inside of bag.  Machine wash in cold water, gentle cycle; lay flat to dry or tumble dry low.
